Southernness Artisan Candles
Over the years, Southernness has created a unique celebration of The South with Southernness Original Historic Scents and Candles. Our unsurpassed quality and creativity honor the rich heritage and authentic "scents of place" with natural botanicals and classic culinary memories of our part of America.
We travel to France, do much of our fragrance design there and have worked with French perfumers for years. However, we do most of our production in the Southern part of the United States. More than 95% of workers involved with Southernness are Americans working in The South. Southernness is made for Southerners by Southerners.
To qualify as a prestigious, Southernness Historic Scent celebrant, a place must be at least fifty years old with roots somewhere in the twelve states of the Southland: the eleven states of The Confederacy (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia) and Kentucky.
One of the earliest Southernness Original Historic Scents was done at the behest of the trustees at President Andrew Jackson's 1820 mansion, The Hermitage, near Nashville, Tennessee. In that case, we were given access to the President's family papers where in a diary of his granddaughter we found mention of "the lovely scent of lilacs wafting through the open dining room windows."
The most recently introduced Southernness Historic Scent was inspired by our study of the original, 1926 landscape drawings of Warren H. Manning for the city of Mountain Brook, Alabama. The fragrance, "Original Green, Mountain Brook 1926" captures a hand-picked, green bouquet of indigenous willow, oakmoss and mistletoe in a fresh breeze.
In the past, we have hand-blended our original essences in various formulations: perfumes, colognes, lotions, bathing salts and gels, soaps. Southernness Original Historic Scents have proven most popular as handpoured, small batch, artisan candles. Our quality, originality, trademarked knowledge of The South, and cultural integrity are unsurpassed.
